چکیده
بررسی روان‌شناختی عملکرد رهبران سیاسی، یکی از رویکردهای موردتوجه در تحلیل سیاست خارجی است و با توجه به اختیارات گسترده رئیس‌جمهور در ایالات متحده آمریکا، این‌دسته از رویکردها اهمیت دوچندانی پیدا می‌کنند. این پژوهش در پی تحلیل چرایی تصمیم‌های سیاست خارجی جیمی کارتر در مورد تحولات پیش و پس از انقلاب اسلامی ایران از طریق ارجاع به عناصر روان‌شناختی کارتر است. چارچوب نظری مورداستفاده در این مقاله، رفتاردرمانی عقلانی‌ـ‌عاطفی است که آلبرت الیس، روانشناس آمریکایی، ابداع کرده است. این مقاله با بررسی رخدادهای تأثیرگذار بر زندگی کارتر و نحوه تفسیر آن‌ها از سوی وی، شخصیت او را تحلیل کرده است. این روش، در تحلیل زندگی فرد، رویکردی تاریخی دارد؛ به‌این‌معنا که چرخه‌ای از رخدادهای بیرونی با تفسیرهای پیوسته، به نتایج مشخص تبدیل می‌شوند. در ادامه و برپایۀ این الگو، پنج ویژگی شخصیتی آشکار کارتر استخراج شده و شیوۀ تأثیرگذاری آن‌ها از طریق ارائه مصداق‌هایی تبیین شده است. نتایج به‌دست‌آمده بیانگر این است که کارتر، به‌رغم فشارهای ساختاری در داخل ایالات متحده و همچنین، فشارهای ناشی از نظام بین‌الملل، در رویارویی با انقلاب ایران و شیوۀ واکنش به انقلابیون و همچنین، اشغال سفارت ایالات متحده از سوی دانشجویان مسلمان، برپایۀ ویژگی‌های روان‌شناختی‌اش، ازجمله کمال‌گرایی و وظیفه‌گرایی، تصمیم گرفته است.
